Staffan Mårtensson, Principal Clarinet of the Stockholm Royal Opera, is the Artistic Director of Östergötland Music Days/Linköping Chamber Music Festival since 2001. Read more about him on

Here is his presentation of this year’s programme:

Östergötland Music Days 2011 open with a tribute to the world famous Swedish singer Jussi Björling (1911-1960). Royal Court Singer Karl-Magnus Fredriksson and Östgöta Symphonic Wind Orchestra show that the human voice and human respiration can make our souls vibrate. A timeless manifestation of the infinite spectrum of expression given to us by nature. As the pen beats the sword and dialogue defeats dogma, the living music represents a peaceful but invincible power, necessary to stand up for.

For the eighteenth consecutive year, you are invited to enjoy chamber music, jazz, singing, children’s concerts in concert halls, art museums, churches and castles around the province of Östergötland. Some of the country’s greatest stage personalities will be our guests: Staffan Scheja, Semmy Stalhammer, Peter Getz, Katarina Leoson, Markus Leoson, Steffo Törnquist. A high-class string quartet from Prague ¬– the Vlach Quartet – will visit us.

Many of the artists, younger and older, have a background in Östergötland. The ensembles of Östgötamusiken, the professional wind music institution in Linköping, and the Östgöta Chamber Choir have provided several creative programme ideas. I’m very happy to welcome back the founder of the Music Days, Otto Freudenthal, who will give a piano recital in Bjärka-Säby.

Linköping Chamber Music Festival is a concentrate of the Music Days and forms a natural part of the Linköping City Feast. This year we present two concerts in the Crusell Hall, which is very satisfactory, considering the bounds between the arranging association MIL – Music in Linköping, and composer B. H. Crusell (1775-1838).

I want to reclaim the tradition of inviting a Composer of the Year. This year, his name is Johan Ullén. Come and hear his fantastic music and his piano playing! A young composing musician, with such an accessible and natural musical language; this is a rare treat.

I'm loooking forward to meeting the audience – you, the music-lovers, you who believe in interplay and communication, in musical expression and musical experiences.

Welcome!
